What a great event we had in 2011, although the weather wasn’t so kind as we had a couple of chilly, breezy evenings. But that didn’t put off the ale drinkers who headed to the marquee on the Beach lawns in droves. This really is becoming a popular event in Weston-super-Mare’s calendar and long may it continue. Over 6000 pints of ale and 3000 pints of cider were sold during the three day event. We started on Thursday evening with a dinner and race night which was well attended by nearly 200 people. They sat down to a glorious three course dinner followed by 6 horse races. Some guests went home by limousine and others on the bus, but we can’t all be winners!!! On Friday night and Sunday lunchtime we were entertained by The Axe Valley Jazz Men who continue to provide great music and entertainment. Things were a little livelier on Saturday night when Mark Frisby and his band ‘Refflector’ played to an enthusiastic audience. We were able to donate £5,000 to Weston HospiceCare and £5,000 to the RNLI and a further £4,500 was divided up and went to many other local good causes. Whilst the event is primarily organised by a small committee within the Lions Club, it could not go on without the help of ALL the members and their wives who serve behind the bar, sell raffle tickets and work in the ticket office. Thanks! Some Numbers88 barrels of ale based on a Celtic theme plus many local brews.300 gallons of local cider 120 local business sponsors 5 pigs and hundreds of burgers and sausages We would thank all of our sponsors and suppliers who help to make this such a successful event. |
